Nneka Egbujiobi: The Attorney Who Created the Newest Dating App

It was 2018 and Nneka Egbujiobi was at home one night reading a few direct messages she received on Instagram. Not finding any of them interesting, she wondered why there wasn't an exclusive dating app for sophisticated Africans. Her irritation toward the unwelcome messages led her to create Hello Africa.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts to Nigerian parents, Egbujiobi sought to help people like herself form connections with the global African diaspora. As a lawyer, she also noticed how her and her friends were working long hours and knew that such dedication didn't leave much time for dating. She created the Hello Africa app to foster connections between intelligent, hard working African men and women by inviting them all to one platform.

“I wanted Africans like myself to be able to meet a vast majority of quality people easily,” Egbujiobi said. "The app allows users to select from all 54 African countries and users can select multiple countries based on their dating preferences."

Egbujiobi, who received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and her jurist doctorate degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School, began working on Hello Africa after practicing law in California for several years. Though she initially wondered why a platform like this hadn't existed for her and her friends before, Egbujiobi said seeing her vision come to life made her realize everything happens for a reason.

Now, Hello Africa is available on Google Play and iOS for ages 17 and up. "It's simple; select your country of heritage, fill out your profile, select the countries you are interested in, and find your match," the iOS description reads.

“We have a long way to go but it’s amazing seeing how many Africans we've been able to bring together already,” Egbujiobi said while praising her team's efforts. “We also have new app features coming soon and I'm excited for current and future users to experience them."

In the mist of her excitement, Egbujiobi credits her parents, Dr. Leo and Bridget Egbujiobi, for her success. Both migrated from Nigeria to the U.S. in 1979. “My mom showed me how to navigate life with strength and my dad taught me humility,” she said.

Egbujiobi believes success is doing more than having superficial goals and encourages other budding entrepreneurs to follow their dreams. “Make sure that it's actually your dream because you may not have the motivation or desire to see it to fruition if it's not,” she said. "There'll be sleepless nights, greater expenses, and unforeseen delays but the reward is better. With Hello Africa, we're taking the continent to a new plateau.”
