Interview: Despite a Split From His Twin, Peter Okoye, Continues Pursuing His Music Career

Mr P interview

The legendary Nigerian musician, Peter Okoye, became a household name along with his twin brother, Paul Okoye, after forming their duo, P-Square in 1999. Soon after, they were not only known in Nigeria, but after several hits, the musicians successfully made international waves with songs alongside artists like Ginuwine, Rick Ross, Akon, T.I., and Sean Paul.

However, after nearly 20 years of enjoying the spotlight together, a 2016 misunderstanding led the duo to split. Peter Okoye decided to continue pursuing his music career and is currently on tour in the U.S. "I've learned to be myself, do my thing, and enjoy myself," he said in an AfroVibes interview.

Now introduced as Mr. P. under his new record label, P Classic Records, Okoye received several endorsements. He is a brand ambassador for KIA Motors Nigeria and has a partnership deal with Empire, an American distribution company and record label based in San Francisco, California. Additionally, Okoye launched an online lottery platform called, Zoom Lifestyle, in partnership with MTN Nigeria, where four people win 2 million naira each month, which is about $5,400 in the U.S.

With his new partnerships, Okoye released singles like “Cool It Down“ and “Look Into My Eyes.“ He also collaborated with Jamaican-American artist, Nyanda, for the song, “Wokie Wokie“ which already accumulated more than 10 million views on YouTube.

Okoye who resides in Nigeria, continues booking U.S. tour dates with sold out shows - even on his birthday, he performed in Nashville, Tennessee. However, through it all, he said he still cares deeply for family.

"For me, family is important," he said in-part. Some of his new music videos even feature his son, Cameron but ultimately, Okoye believes people should continue being themselves despite circumstances.

"One thing that keeps me, Mr. P., doing my thing is because at an earlier stage, I found it really difficult to express myself, but now I do," he said. "Go out there and represent; be you, do you and the rest will be history."
